This project is a series of multimedia drawings illustrating the phenomena of a phantom limb, the phenomenon occurs when an amputated or missing limb gives off the sensation that it is still attached and moving with other parts of the body. The series of charcoal drawings depict people in realistic situations dealing with the aftermath of a lost limb, which is be supported with animated digital drawings of the appropriate missing limb attached.
I have always been fascinated by the phantom limb phenomenon due to its cryptic and exclusive circumstance, which makes this topic very compelling and challenging to tackle.
The missing limbs are embellished in flowers, because flowers each have their own unique emotional and spiritual symbolism. As a result, the flowers will contribute to further explain the emotions of the subject.
The project consists of two sections—charcoal drawings depicting the setting, and animated digital drawings of the missing limb. A projector is used to display the digital drawings over the charcoal drawings to unite them together; creating the illusion of a completely whole person. The use of the projections should explain the occurrence of a phantom limb that each charcoal drawing cannot explain individually, which concurrently emphasizes unity and the sense of separation.
